Why Is This Training So Important?

Be Prepared

  • 1 in 3 Canadians say they are struggling with their mental health.

  • 1 in 3 Canadians will be affected by mental illness in their lifetime.

This means that your customers and clients are dealing with mental health challenges and the chance of topics like depression, anxiety, and other overwhelming life "stuff" like loss and grief coming up in conversation are high.

Know How To Respond

Learn the important skills to have a conversation with a customer (or a workplace team member) when hard topics come up in conversation.

Know how to respond appropriately.

Know how to encourage appropriate resources.

Know how to support someone in crisis.

Increase Your Confidence

Know that you have the skills to be an amazing support to your customers in your conversations.

Know that you are a safe space for them to be themselves.

Have confidence that you know what to do if they share something personal that needs outside support from a professional.

What Will I Learn?

Mental Health First Aid is intended for adults interacting with adults (18 years and older). This course focuses on the four most common mental health disorders including substance related, mood related, anxiety and trauma related, and psychotic disorders. Participants who take this course are well prepared to interact confidently about mental health with their family, friends, communities, and workplaces.

Key Outcomes

  • Increased awareness of signs and symptoms of the most common mental health problems

  • Decreased stigma related to mental health

  • Increased confidence interacting with individuals experiencing a mental health problem or crisis

  • Increased help actually provided to individuals in crisis or experiencing a mental health problem

Feedback from October Training

In October 2022 we hosted the first ever Mental Health First Aid training in St. John's specifically for salon industry and beauty professionals.  We welcomed stylists, nail technicians and estheticians for 2 days of training and conversation about mental health and wellbeing - supporting both clients and co-workers.

Alison Butler

Hey! I'm Alison

I'm a full time Mental Health First Aid trainer and mom of 2. For the past 15 years I have been training and speaking to audiences large and small, virtually and in person.

My goal is to talk about mental health and wellbeing in a way that everyone can understand. I want to break down barriers of what mental health "looks like" and share the message that we can all work together to support others.
