53% of managers feel burned out

Updated: Jul 22

Burnout is a problem in almost every workplace, but were you aware that many managers are at even higher risk? 53% of managers feel burned out according to Work Trend Index, a global survey of workers across multiple industries and companies.

Why is the workplace burnout rate so high for managers?

There are a variety of factors, but commonly:

  • greater demands with fewer resources

  • low recognition

  • unsustainable workload

  • ensuring team members are supported while also trying to manage their own work

  • Expectations to be "always on"

What are the risks to Workplaces for manager burnout?

Turnover is an increased risk, along with lower productivity and motivation.

  • Managers experiencing exhaustion are 1.8 times more likely to leave the company compared to managers not experiencing it.

  • Managers experiencing cynicism, are 3 times more likely to leave the company compared to managers not experiencing it.

  • Managers with a lack of professional efficacy are 3.4 times more likely to leave the company.

  • When a manager is experiencing all three dimensions (exhaustion, cynicism, lack of professional efficacy) they are 5.3 times more likely to leave the company compared to a manager experiencing none.
