What is Mental Health First Aid (MHFA)?

Mental Health First Aid Standard is the foundational MHFA program designed for everyone. It is a globally recognized, evidence-based training that empowers people to:

  • Recognize signs that someone may be developing a mental health problem

  • Respond to mental health crises with confidence

  • Provide initial help and support

  • Guide individuals toward appropriate professional and community resources

You do not need to be a mental health professional to take this course.

According to Mental Health First Aid Canada:

“Mental Health First Aid is a training course designed to give members of the public the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. The evidence behind the program demonstrates that it builds mental health literacy, decreases stigmatizing attitudes, and helps individuals identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental illness.”

Canadian statistics show that one in five Canadians will experience a mental health problem in any given year, making MHFA skills increasingly important in workplaces and communities across Newfoundland and Labrador.
